"I thought I would drop you a note about my experience with 1-2-1 pilates instruction. I have had about 12 one hour weekly sessions with a local instructor so far.
My back/sciatica has improved remarkably to the point that I am considering joining the others to hill walk this month at least some of the way. My pilates instructor has been a great help in sorting me out. (she thought I had a perfect body except for poor posture, poor balance, poor breathing, the pelvis tilts the wrong way, tight glutes, quads and hamstrings, piriformis syndrome, dropped shoulder, stiff shoulder, a very stiff neck, and unengaged core muscles).
All these things can be contributing to low back pain and sciatica. None of them show on an x-ray or an MRI. Pilates is geared to correcting these problems with a good instructor and some fairly conscientious work by the "patient". It also has subtle psychological benefits that help with coping with back pain too. Just having better posture improves one's self esteem, I have found.
I first went to a doctor with back pain in 1976 when I was working in Newfoundland. Since then I have seen numerous GP doctors, had two MRIs, three spinal Xrays (showing plenty wrong), seen an orthopedic surgeon, and a specialist back surgeon. The only person who actually DID anything was my pilates instructor - the "treatment" was quite easy and enjoyable - it makes you feel good just doing it."

"Suffering from M.S. I had been advised of the benefits of Pilates by my physio and M.S. nurses. They told me it could help with my symptoms (drop foot and muscular weakness in my leg, as well as fatigue.) Since beginning Pilates over a year ago with Alice my symptoms have improved dramatically. The gentle exercising, whilst I found difficult at times, is not tiring. With perseverance it has brought about fantastic results and energises me for the day. My mobility and balance have improved with greater muscular strength in my core and legs.
